Apathy, loss, and awakening. These are some of the themes on Northern Weather's sophomore album 'Uninspired Pop Songs', a tongue-in-cheek title from a lyric on the album. The album is anything but; these songs come from a place of trying to get one's life on track despite a world working against them. With powerful chords, math rock inspired intricate guitar work, and a driving rhythm section, Northern Weather seeks to strike an emotional note similar to their debut album 'A Shade of Melancholy'.
The group launched into writing their second album before the first was even released, having found a sense of vigor to create new material like never before. They used new elements such as keys and upright bass; they also tried some new songwriting formats, as is evident by the country-inspired 'Sweet Grass, MT'. Other tracks like 'Perdere Diem' and 'New Bark Town' call on the band's familiar blend of midwest emo meets pop-punk. The lead-off track 'Model T Jamboree' showcases the band's love of heavier music, while 'Melatonin' demonstrates a dreamier, slower sound. 'Wildflower' is bassist Garrett Kimmel's first foray into lead vocals, while co-lead vocalists Rob Keller and Alex Styles split the remaining songs almost equally.
Formed in 2018 after some lineup changes of an old band, Northern Weather is Robert Keller (guitar/vocals), Alex Styles (guitar/vocals), Garrett Kimmel (bass/vocals), Peter Shand (drums), and Leah Styles (keyboard/vocals). Kevin Pees wrote and recorded drums for the album but departed the band in January 2024. Peter Shand joined on drums shortly thereafter; Leah Styles was added as an official member in May 2024. 'Uninspired Pop Songs' was created with some familiar assistance. Steve Perrino once again recorded, produced, mixed, and mastered the album, while Christian Arnder crafted single and album art. With a great creative team around them, Northern Weather is proud to present this newest collection of songs.
